Why Combine Cognitive Behavioural Therapy with Business Consulting?

Level Up! Have The Edge is a cutting-edge practice that uniquely integrates technical business consulting with performance coaching to drive optimal results. We take pride in tackling any challenges you face and tailor our programs to suit your distinct needs. Arthur Smolarkiewicz, MBA, CPA, CMA, founder of Have The Edge, observed that many consulting projects falter during implementation—not due to a lack of technical solutions, but because of unaddressed corporate and individual perspectives. To bridge this gap, our holistic consulting and integrative coaching methodology offers tools, systems, and models designed to ensure long-term success for clients and their organizations.

Our two-fold approach aligns technical solutions with the right mindsets, fostering transformation at both organizational and individual levels. With a collaborative and seamless consultative process, our experts and partners are dedicated to helping you achieve sustainable growth and excellence.

People often ask me, “Why combine Cognitive Behavioural Therapy with business consulting? It doesn’t make sense. You’re an MBA, an accountant who worked for KPMG, a successful dojo owner, and a world championship competitor. How did you, Sensei, Mr. Entrepreneur, end up dealing with depression, anxiety, and loss of self-esteem?”

Looking back, the word “impossible” didn’t exist in my vocabulary. I earned straight A’s, scholarships, and left university to start a dojo. I won championships in Karate and Bodybuilding and sold the dojo successfully after obtaining an MBA and CPA designation. In the corporate world, I aimed high and succeeded, securing a position at the Big 4—Deloitte, KPMG, PwC, or EY.

Psychology? Therapy? They weren’t part of my life plan. Psychology was just an elective to boost my GPA, and therapy, I thought, was for the mentally weak—not for ego-driven “Terminators” like me. But while at KPMG, I started to question what happiness and fulfillment really meant. Was I in control of my life, or just another cog in the wheel?

Then, everything fell apart in 2014. I was laid off from a COO position, followed by a divorce. I moved back to Toronto after 20 years, starting a consulting business, but the blow to my ego was immense. Work projects were scarce, and reintegrating into the city was tough. Self-doubt crept in. Was I not as good as I thought? Was I too old? Had I lost my drive? Fear, depression, and anxiety about the future set in.

Traditional therapy didn’t help; the therapists didn’t understand my mindset. I found work here and there, but the satisfaction and unstoppable force I once felt were gone.

Today, I’m the part-time COO of a fast-growing startup, helping the company double in size within two years, while running a Cognitive and Business Consulting company. I’m happy, fulfilled, and my energy is back. How?

It began nearly ten years ago at a self-development seminar. I asked myself: could it be about belief? Mindset? Over two years, I immersed myself in courses from Covey, Tracy, Peterson, Dispenza, Chopra, and others. I co-authored a book with Brian Tracy and spoke alongside Robert Kiyosaki. Building on these experiences, I developed my own techniques, blending CBT, courses, books, and personal insights. I wasn’t just a consultant—I was my own first client.

Now, I want to share this knowledge. It’s never too late. As children, we saw our potential as limitless—dreaming of being doctors, astronauts, or artists. Then we grew up, focusing more on limitations than possibilities. But it’s never too late to dream again. Ray Kroc founded McDonald’s at 52. Samuel L. Jackson got his first major role at 42. Stan Lee began his comic career near 40.

I help entrepreneurs and professionals reach the next level—in both systems and mentality. I guide people to seize new opportunities, start businesses, and rediscover their potential. By adopting a new mindset and changing your mental schema, you can unlock your true potential, find happiness, and create a fulfilling life.
